July is Sarcoma and Bone Cancer Awareness Month

July marks Sarcoma and Bone Cancer Awareness Month, a crucial time to raise awareness about these rare yet significant cancers that affect bones and soft tissues. Sarcomas, including osteosarcoma and various soft tissue sarcomas like rhabdomyosarcoma, pose unique challenges in diagnosis and treatment, highlighting the importance of advancements in care and treatment options.

Astera’s Radiation Oncologist and Medical Director at Procure Proton Therapy Center, Dr. Brian Chon, says, “Proton therapy is a precise form of radiation that has been used for sarcomas for many decades. Proton therapy can better protect critical normal structures like the brain and spinal cord in patients who present with skull base and spinal cord sarcomas. Protons are also the treatment of choice for sarcomas that arise in the abdomen and pelvis (retroperitoneal sarcomas), as protons can limit the dose to the bowel, liver, and bladder over conventional x-ray-based radiation treatments.  Any large, multicompartmental sarcomas in close proximity to sensitive, normal structures should be considered for proton therapy.”

As we observe Sarcoma and Bone Cancer Awareness Month, Astera Cancer Care remains committed to pioneering advancements in cancer treatment through innovation and compassionate care.
