The holidays can be a challenging time for people with cancer and their families. Even though this season is usually filled with joy and family gatherings, battling cancer can bring along feelings of stress and isolation. As a caregiver or family member, supporting your loved one through this journey is essential. There are ways to make the holidays a little easier for your loved one.

Be Flexible with Holiday Traditions:

Everyone looks forward to holiday traditions, but when you are going through cancer treatment, you may be experiencing side effects that slow you down. Instead of trying to do everything as usual, share that it is okay to scale back on celebrations or create new traditions in which everyone can participate.

Be Supportive Emotionally:

The holidays bring up a range of emotions. It is important to recognize and validate those feelings. Let your loved one know you are there to listen and be there however they need you. Acknowledging these feelings can be a massive comfort for someone undergoing treatment.

Offer Help:

Practical help can also be a great stress relief during the holiday season. You can offer specific help like preparing meals or helping shop for gifts. This allows your loved one to feel supported and not feel as overwhelmed.

Respect Boundaries:

Fatigue is common during cancer treatment. It is important for those in treatment not to push themselves too far. Give your loved ones space without them having to feel guilt. Rest will allow them to prioritize the events that matter most to them.

Supporting a loved one with cancer during the holidays requires patience and empathy. The holidays can still be magical, even if they look different this year.
