Although May is recognized as Oncology Nursing Month, we celebrate our Oncology nurses at Astera Cancer Care every day for the significant role and incredible impact they have in patient care. This year’s theme, Empowering Hope, Transforming Care, spotlights the compassionate efforts Oncology nurses contribute to redefining cancer care. Oncology nurses are integral members of our Astera Cancer Care team, and work in a variety of roles, including patient assessment, patient education, coordination of patient care, direct patient care, symptom management, and supportive care.

Understanding the Role of an Oncology Nurse:

Patient Assessment

An oncology nurse reviews a patient’s treatment plan with their oncologist and cancer care team, and monitors a patient’s response to treatment. They also assess a patient’s physical and emotional well-being throughout their cancer journey to help optimize the quality of life for their patients.

Patient Education

Oncology nurses educate patients, their families, and their caregivers about cancer diagnosis, treatment, and possible treatment side effects.

Coordination of Patient Care

Oncology nurses are the linchpins that play a crucial part in coordinating, communicating, and collaborating with a patient’s care team.

Direct Patient Care

According to the Oncology Nursing Society, the majority of Oncology Nursing Society members have involvement with direct patient care. At Astera, our Oncology nurses play a pivotal role in direct patient care, and practice in medical oncology, radiation oncology, hematology, and palliative & supportive care.

Symptom Management

Oncology nurses play a pivotal role in treating and managing patient’s symptoms during their cancer journey.

Supportive Care

Oncology nurses are a beacon of hope and a source of strength for their patients. They are leaders in cancer care, helping to optimize the quality of life for their patients. From providing education, to explaining a cancer diagnosis, ensuring safe delivery of cancer treatments, helping manage symptoms, and providing comfort during the cancer journey, oncology nurses are there every step of the way.

Recognize an Oncology nurse in your community this Oncology Nursing Month by nominating them for an ONS award to celebrate their transformative work and dedication to the field.
