Somewhere between treatments, appointments, and much-needed rest, it's easy for your couch to become home base.
It makes sense. And sometimes, that's exactly where you need to be. But after a while, even the most comfortable spot in the house can start to feel like the only spot.
Stepping outside won't change your treatment plan. What it can do is something quieter and equally meaningful. It can remind you that life is still happening all around you, and that you're still a part of it. That shift, as small as it sounds, is something our patients at Astera know well.
Time in nature, whether it’s a short walk or sitting on a bench in the sun, has been shown to lower cortisol levels, reduce anxiety, improve mood, and support overall well-being. During cancer treatment, when fatigue, emotional stress, and isolation can feel overwhelming, those benefits matter. Getting outside, even briefly, can help dial all three back with fresh air and daylight.
There's something to be said for changing your environment. A different backdrop gives your brain something new to process. You notice things like the birds, a breeze, or the smell of fresh grass. For a few minutes, the fresh air and the peace and quiet can calm your nervous system.
Choosing the Right Place
Look for places with benches or seating along the path so you can rest. Shade matters more than you might expect. Flat, paved walking paths can make getting around easier, and accessible parking and nearby restrooms can remove unnecessary stress from the outing. Certain chemotherapy medications increase sun sensitivity, so choosing a tree-lined path, covered pavilion, or a shaded park can help you stay comfortable and protected. Our care team can tell you exactly what to watch for based on where you are in treatment. If you're unsure whether your treatment increases sun sensitivity, ask your Astera care team. We're happy to help you understand what's safest for you.
A Few Tips Before You Head Out
Before leaving home, remember a few simple essentials:
- Bring plenty of water to stay hydrated.
- Wear sunscreen and protective clothing, even on cloudy days.
- Try to go out in the morning or early evening, when temperatures are typically cooler.
- Listen to your body and rest whenever you need to.
- If you feel up to it, invite a family member or friend who is happy to move at your pace.
- There's no goal to reach and no distance you need to cover. Sometimes simply sitting outside and taking a few deep breaths is enough.
Once the spot feels right, the rest is up to you. Bring plenty of water and sunscreen. The sun can catch you off guard, especially during treatment. Aim for mornings, which are usually the best time to get outside before the heat sets in. If you can, invite someone who is happy to move at your pace. The company can certainly make it ten times better.
