Each year, Labor Day offers an opportunity to pause, spend time with loved ones, and recognize the contributions of working people across the country. Although many consider it the unofficial end of summer, the holiday has a deeper history rooted in the efforts of American workers.
The History of Labor Day
Labor Day began during the labor movement of the late 19th century, when many Americans worked long hours under difficult and often unsafe conditions. Workers organized to advocate for safer workplaces, fair wages, reasonable schedules, and greater recognition of their contributions.
The first Labor Day celebration took place in New York City on September 5, 1882, when thousands of workers gathered for a parade. As the movement grew, more states began recognizing the holiday. In 1894, Labor Day officially became a federal holiday observed on the first Monday in September.
Today, Labor Day continues to honor the people whose work supports our families, strengthens our communities, and keeps essential services moving forward.
